Artists vs Hobbyists

Whats your level of dedication? This is simply from my perspective, but I see hobbyists as a few people. #1.) Artists that constantly do the same thing over and over again, like industry mixtapes. I discussed this on my radio show, but the difference between Wiz rappin over someone else's beats is the fact that he has a large fan base and whenever he does post a song a lot more people are seeing that rather than a couple of hundred followers or facebook friends. I keep saying it over and over, mix up your "mixtapes" with not just industries but also original beats. Which will require you to in some cases buy beats from a producer. Which leads to #2) Self investing, a lot of artists look at this and take it wrong like producers are just trying to make money off them. Producers do have to eat, especially if an artist expects to get a beat, put it on an album and make money. Why shouldn't a producer get paid? I know a great amount of producer friends of mine who have $0.99 beats for lease , myself personally I do it for $30 cause I feel like thats the average online price I do it for. Also producers hold sales with great deals and I guarantee there are artist who look for FREE who never act on any of the sales they see online. Investing itself doesn't have to be monetary it could be knowledge, learn about online marketing, or more about the technical aspects of engineering and production.
3.) Change your routine, this to me is the most hardest part of it all. Lots of us work 9:00-5:00's and we do the usual go to work, come home play games, go hangout with friends and go to the club. I am not saying don't do this by any means but limit it. People who don't believe in what you're doing won't help you reach your vision. It doesn't make them bad people but you have to still INVEST in you with TIME as well. From working on music, networking, setting up a site, brainstorming ideas, there is always a lot of different ways to spend time then the usual.

Keep a positive mindset and always believe you will succeed, even if that means separating yourself from negative people, friends or fam. Negative energy isn't good for anyone's success

Online Music Marketing with a Limited or No Budget for Artists

In today's world, you don't always need a major label to get a buzz, its all about doing a few things and being consistent in doing so. 1.) Drop links inside of forums, don't just go and leave a link to your music, but listen to someone elses music in return. 2.) Collaborating with new artists or producers whether its in your city or not. People remember names, thats why it is always good to get your name out there and work with different people you aren't accustomed to working with. 3.) Biggest one is be different, today as I look online, a lot of artists are doing the same thing, from FREE industry beat mixtapes, to free tagged beats in general. Why would anyone want to listen to a million remixes of the hottest song on the radio from an un-established artist? Thats the difference between a major artist doing a remix opposed to someone trying to get a buzz doing a remix. One other thing and I personally don't know where this comes from, but a lot of artists have a problem or feel they don't have to pay for beats. A lot of producers make it affordable for artists to buy beats some for 99 cents others sell beat specials like 5 for $20 and some artists still have problems doing that. I know you heard me say it time and time again as producers we didn't walk into guitar center asking for free merchandise, so why is it a lot of artists feel they don't have to pay for beats? I can't speak for other producers, but I will promote any artist that supports me, if you've seen my twitter or facebook time line or listen to my radio show then you know I'm not lying. 4. Last piece, get your own website and keep it fresh with content daily or weekly. Make your website a place fans can come to hang out and listen to music or see something interesting.

Coli Hellraiser Tawag Model hits Dee Dot's Producers Corner 1/30/12

Biography

Coli Hellraiser, of Virginia Beach, Virginia is an alluring 22-year-old mix of Cherokee, Powhatan, Irish, and West Indian. Her measurements are 32B/C-24-37, which she carries perfectly on her 5'4 105 pound frame. She has been modeling since 2005 but not seriously until 2007 and since then her exceptional looks have been featured on over 30 automotive, and modeling websites. Major car shows such as the world-renowned Funkmater Flex show, NOPI, and HIN have used her extensively. She also competes professionally in national swimsuit competitions.

She is looking forward to extending her portfolio to include even more designers, photographers, stylist, recording artists, and potential management. While interested in being part of such car shows likes SEMA and MAGIC, she eventually would like to spread her wings to include commercial fashion modeling. In her own words she wants to work one on one with clothing designers bringing their pieces to life, trying something very different and elegant all at the same time. Everyday that she continues to network and schedule shoots are steps closer to her establishing herself as a known model and building upon her resume and versatility.

When not modeling she spends her time working or having that beautiful face buried in textbooks, as she studies graphic design, and hopes to actually get on the other side of the camera to foster her other passion of photography. She also loves every aspect of music from the production and mixing of a song to dancing to the rhythm of it. Yes this multi-talented beauty also is an exceptional dancer in a wide range of mediums and can sing as well but admits she would like a couple of professional lessons first though.

Everyone that knows her happily says that she is an extremely down to earth person with a lot of drive, and can be a comedian at times, which are rare qualities when speaking about attractive people especially models but she also knows when to be serious and professional at the correct times. Given the chance to show what she can do, Coli Hellraiser will be living up to her name raising you know what while taking control of the fashion world.

NFL Predictions

Well that time has come, a day before this season, no video this year on my picks but I'll pick through this blog post. Last year I had one team hindered all year with injuries in the Saints, still made the playoffs, but wasn't the year I thought they'd have. On the other side was close once again with the Jets, but you unfortunately don't get credit for being close. This year, I think tomorrow nights Saints vs Packers game will be a future NFC title game. In the NFC I think its them 2 and maybe Philly. Dallas hadn't fixed their problems yet, same secondary, young offensive line I see maybe 8-8 to 9-7. My sleeper in the NFC is hard cause I think there are 3 teams that didn't get into the playoffs last year that can get in this year Tampa, AZ & St. Louis. In the AFC I see a race once again with New England, Pittsburgh & the Jets then there is just everyone else. Sleeper in the AFC to make the playoffs is Oakland, not saying that cause I'm a Raiders fan, but they went 8-8 , undefeated in their division but still didn't make the playoffs. I think they win the division and break they're long playoff drought. In the end......I see the Saints vs Patriots in the SB in Indy! See you guys at the end!

Dee Dot's Producers Corner: Tempo Based Recording

DeeDot's Producers Corner Ep. 4 "Creating Drum rolls in Reason 5"

Producers Mindset

Whats good to all producers out there? First I'd like to shoutout all the Producers who follow Dee Dot's Producers Corner & live off beats, I look at these 2 respective groups as a fraternity of Producers.

I've been peeping a lot of timelines and message boards from a lot of producers particularly on soundclick and facebook and what I found are of course a lot of producers that are grinding and making things happen EVERY DAY on the other side of things there are the ones who still view this as a hobby and either A.)let other people influence their decisions and work ethic whether its friends or family. B.) Make a ton of beats and don't know how to market online or C.) Procrastinate. Now to start off with "A", we all have people in our lives we got love for dearly, but there comes a time where if you really want to pursue this music production, you're going to have to break out of your normal habits, playing video games 8-10 hours a day, buying jordans, hanging out with the homies etc. When it comes to people especially your family you're not saying their bad people, but you have to put in time whether its in the lab, promoting, or simply getting the knowledge on how you can build an actual beat business. You will get people that say its not possible, or even not take it as serious as you but you have to keep a consistent rhythm around things. Spend a few hours daily working on your biz which is not just making beats, but learning how to sell beats online or locally, learning how to network, or learning mixing and mastering techniques. The internet is an unlimited resource for knowledge, we all know how to google something when we want it, whats stopping you from googling something that can help you become successful in the future. Now comes the part of saying , every day I'm going to work______ hours a day on my business or whatever the case. If you made a few beats and expect to get paid the same day you're probably in the wrong business. What you do today has an effect 3 months, 6 months a year and so on so forth down the line. When I first learned about beat selling online it was 2009 I had got laid off from my job and I just did music for 5 months. I stumbled on a liveoffbeats.com ad on myspace and clicked on it, little did I know a few years later my life had changed. I took some of the courses and audio Postman had released and just kept doing what he said in all of them. Behold 2 years later I finally sell my first beat which was in March of this year. It didn't stop there, from that point on pretty much every month since then I've sold a beat, some months up to 6 beats some as little as one but its progress, and these were from people I've built a relationship with over the span of 2 years, and guess what they're going to tell their friends and so on so forth. So what I'm saying is get the knowledge, then apply it and be consistent at it. Just cause you're not making a beat one day doesn't mean you can't have a productive day, get online and network! Visualize your future and set goals, I promised they'll be reached!

Next Weeks Guest Layzee Boy hits Dee Dot's Producers Corner

Born February 27th 1980 in Dallas,TX. Still a work in progress,
LAYZEE BOI has become one of the most humble, polite and deepest
artist you will ever in the industry. Growing up in many suburbs
located in and around Dallas County has imprinted such a variety of
influences on this up and coming Rap Artist. Just like many Rap Artist
hardtimes and struggles isn't anything new to LAYZEE BOI. Everything
from welfare, drugs, lost loved ones and police brutality never kept
this strong soul down. His love and passion for music began as a young
boy with influences such as Michael Jackson, DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh
Prince, New Edition and MC Hammer. As he reached his young teen years
his ears became stuffed with the sounds of N.W.A., 2 Live Crew, Cash
Money Records, 2Pac and most notibly Three 6 Mafia. It was the
crunkness of Three 6 that convinced LAYZEE BOI to pick up a pen in
1994 and start writing.

By 2004, with ten years of developing tracks for a CD that was only
sold around the block "Deep Down South" was done. Never being
discouraged having strong dedication and determination to create a
record that would catch the attention of people in benefiting
positions, "EYEZ WIDE BUCK" is the record. Along with many other
tracks soon to be dropped as MIXXTAPE VOLUME 3 "OUT DA KUT", LAYZEE
BOI is ready to take the industry by storm. Along with fellow rapper
BLAC, this unsigned artist is more than ready to Show & Prove to the
world that he can stand amongst the Elite and ride along with the Best
in the music industry. As he likes to say "I got the KEYZ2DABAKERY!".

Thoughts on my first Major artist or producer interview

As I sit about 30 minutes after interviewing Paul Wall on Dee Dot's Producers Corner, a year ago when I stumbled onto Icebreaker Productions, no where did I think this would happen. First interview of many to come with many major artists, and I hope to produce a track or few for them. I will say to the world, if you have something you believe in or you want to do in life, go ahead and pursue it to the fullest. Sure I'm not where I want to be in my career, but I'm also not where I don't want to be either, don't let anyone tell you that what you want is impossible. 2011 in life has had its ups in my career from selling more beats, to finishing up this EP and the radio show and it isn't even over yet, I started to pursue my vision when I was 25 and learned a lot on the way, some guys start younger, some older but its never too late! I thank god everyday for this music career and the people that constantly show love and support to the fullest each and every day. Away from the limelight it helps take my mind off of life behind the scenes and I want everybody to know that without you we at Dee Dot's Producers Corner , Major Music ENT & Icebreaker Radio that we all appreciate the supporters!

Is Hip Hop back ot being relevant?

Growing up in the 90's hip hop era was an experience and in my 29 year old life I haven't seen it duplicated. Shortly after the 90's, music started becoming to commercialized on MTV, BET and the radio which led to some fans being split on the style of music that was in the mainstream. It sounded more pop than hip hop to a lot of people, it was also like it was being forced down our throats. Now as I look there's a new breed of artist that have emerged, from Curren$y , Wiz Khalifa , Jay Electronica, Wale, Kendrick Lamar to J. Cole to name a few have been really getting into the spotlight. I think its refreshing to hear a new style of music come out. Sure they still don't get any of the air time a lot of other artists get, but they have fans beyond the masses. The great part to this, is that this evolution of hip hop hasn't even fully changed yet. There are more and more artists who are using the same formula from putting their music online to doing local shows, who have built their fan bases from the ground up. Sure its not the 90's, but I like where the industry is headed.

Friday, July 15, 2011

State of Hip Hop (Being an Artist and Producer)

Today it seems as if being an Artist or Producer is the thing to do. Guys taking pictures "thuggin" or in the studio on facebook or twitter. Real artists and producers know the difference and see the difference. Who's talking and who's actually putting things into action. Its cool to rap over industries, but its like I always say you have to eventually create your own identity. Today a lot of values are out of place when guys will buy Jordans or Video games instead of a beat for something they claim they love to do. Stop and think about which side you stand on, think about where your career is right now and think about what you're doing to live your dreams?

Second thing I wanted to address is a lot of artists and producers send me messages on how they can get more known or get more exposure. Some of the things that I did all along and didn't know it which is VERY simple. What is it you ask? Just simple civilized convo with a like minded individual can lead to more opportunities. What helps me is posting in the forums on soundclick and rapmusic.com also the many groups I'm involved in on facebook. Everyday people post links sure you can't listen to all of them but best thing to do is work on building one new relationship each week whether its with an artist, producer or anyone in the music business for that matter. I'm also learning the in's and out's of twitter, which is infact a great networking site because these days most of America has smartphones which have twitter apps which means when you hit them up its going directly to them as a text message.

Last topic is the local scene, some of the things that have helped me get shows and meet more people locally have been looking on craigslist and backpage there are a lot of opportunities some good some not so good, but you never know what you can find in your city. Networking with local artists in general is always an open opportunity like going to shows and events. To get local shows I recommend checking out Afton shows and Webookgigs.info which have helped me in the past as well.

Do all the following over time and see that network grown year after year. You will really be surprised the progress you make as long as you stay consistent. There have literally been guys I've met on myspace in 2006 that I've talked to over the years have helped me as a producer and even appeared on my show. You never know how these relationships can turn out after years.......

Mavs 2011 NBA champs

Well well well, I must say first and foremost congrads and the better team won the series in the Dallas Mavs. They did sweep Miami during the regular season 2-0 and I did pick Miami to win this series but at the beginning of the year my orignal pick was LA vs Boston once more but both were eliminated by the 2 finals participants. The Mavs to me have a completely different look than they did in 2006. A much tougher supporting cast which took a lot of that work off of Dirks shoulders. I've been overly critical of the Mavs for years and as a basketball fan I have to be fair again congrads.

Miami to me didn't look as tough as they do on paper. It almost reminds me of the Lakers team from 2003-2004 season where they had Malone, Kobe, Shaq and Payton , I thought they took MAJOR steps back and I didn't think that Wade or Lebron would have went out like they did in the past 3 games. One other issue was Eric Spolstra's coaching, he wasn't getting in anybodys face he wasn't very animated, way to calm and collect when he should have got off the bench and ripped someone a new one. I originally picked Miami losing to Boston and winning it all next year but I'm not so sure about that given the Celtics may have one more run injury free and the Knicks may also contend remember Billups and Amare were both injured. I think Miami needs a true point guard, better center and a bench that can give them some production.

The Mavs to me are an interesting bunch they can go either way, I definatley think they'll contend again, but wondering how will Caron Butler come back? Also will Kidd's age be an issue playing an 82 game schedule and then the playoffs? Barrea is coming up and could be the short term fix for the future. Then you still have to see what LA will do to get better cause although they got swept they have similar issues and also need a bench. I also think OKC is a young team that will be better, they took 2 steps forward from last year and to me just need to add to that bench. James Harden is on his way to really challenging Westbrook for that "#2" spot on that team as well as possibly becoming a star.

Overall a great season, I hope we don't see a lockout and I am looking forward to the draft and off season. I hope my Pistons can do something big to become relevant once again! Have a great summer, I'll be very limited on sports news and thoughts till Football season begins again!

Mavs vs Heat.....with new faces in new places

At the start of the season, I thought both teams had a chance to play in this years finals, but I thought with Caron Butler Dallas' chances had went out the window. Miami as well going through that horrendous losing streak this year, but will say between the two teams I have seen some great basketball being played. Dallas whom I been very critical of for years have finally showed that they do have heart with come from behind wins, as well as sweeping the 2010 NBA champion Lakers. Miami to me I compare to the Packers in the NFL , they were hot going into the playoffs and the way they beat Boston right before the season ended kind of made me lose confidence in my pick (Boston) lol. I think the series will likely go 6 or 7 and while I do credit Dallas for this run I have to say I'm going with Miami to win this series. I know Dallas swept them during the regular season however its a different animal right now and I think LeBron and D-Wade will be able to match Dirk, and also I think Haslem on Dirk will be something to watch as he shut him down in the 2006 finals. I will also say I wouldn't have a problem with Dallas winning its well deserved after years of playoff struggles. Dirk has played leaps and bounds better and showed up in important games when his team has needed him. I also think it would be good for the city of Dallas, either way I'm just ready to see some good basketball!

NBA Playoffs have arrived

Well the time has come to "Win or Go home" and I must say this is the most wide open I've ever seen the NBA playoffs in a long time. Out west I think their are 3 teams capable of winning it all in Los Angeles , Oklahoma City, but I picked San Antonio to win the west based on 2 things. #1.) Home court advantage, I think a veteran team like this with finals experience and the coaching of Greg Poppovich will be big for them to make another run. I don't care what happen when the Lakers went in there a month ago and beat the pants off the Spurs. The Spurs still tied the season series 2-2 against the Lakers and with Bynam being hurt who knows. I got the Spurs beating LA 4-2 in the western conference finals. Oklahoma City is my sleeper in the west as well, they gave the Lakers all they could handle last year and having Kendrick Perkins will be big for them. In the east I think some how some way Boston will get back in one last time, however Miami is the hottest team in the east going into the playoffs in my opinion I think they're catching fire at the right time. Now heres where I think it might get crazy, I think Boston would beat Chicago in a 7 game series, but think Chicago can beat Miami in a 7 game series. The potential Miami/ Boston series in round 2 will be big, and looking at a potential Magic vs Bulls matchup in round 2 is big as well. I think Chicago needs more size inside and in the back court, thats something that may hurt them in the playoffs. In the end I'm sticking with Boston vs San Antonio in the finals, Boston in 6.

The Independent Movement

Its been a while since I wrote on the blog, just been so busy with the radio show, growing my production business by making beats and working on my mixtape. One thing is now, everyday I'm just so amazed by what I see from peers online and locally. Hip Hop isn't dead either, infact the next wave of artists and producers will take it to another level. This movement has more than replaced the radio , BET and MTV. I see guys grinding creating their own fanbase, releasing their own albums and connecting with people through social networking. To the artists and producers that are truly grinding and you know if you are , keep it up! Its very motivational to me to see everyone succeeding. To the guys that aren't you're probably not, because you might be that guy constantly trying to cut corners (ie free beats, too many industry mixtapes etc) people want something fresh and new. You also gotta create your own "swagg" and image to the music. Its always time to make a change and move in the right direction. This isn't a game though you have to make sure you're doing everything simultaneously industry and original beats.

KingIDivine hits The Producers Corner Next Week

Next week we'll be back with D-DOT's Producers Corner show live on blogtalk.com/icebreakerradio ! This weeks guest is well know for his Crown Jewels Mixtape series which he is about to release the 3rd in the series. Kingidivine has a soulful style which I think the game is in need of right now. We'll be discussing his upcoming projects as just his thoughts on todays production. Here's more straight from his site www.KingIDivine.com

Born to Guyanese and Panamanian parents, King-I-Divine entered the world as Sean Maxwell on January 27, 1982. Growing up in New York City, when hip hop and R&B were in their prime, music became a very influential factor in his life. As a result, King-I Divine’s style of production often utilizes dusty kicks and snares, reminiscent the booming 1990’s urban sound.

Producers Corner Show Teaser with D-DOT aka On The Track Coming Soon

Producers You Have To Do This To Sell

Let The Madness Begin!

Well we're just days before the NCAA tournament, I feel like a kid on Christmas day! I am a big basketball fan in general, its my favorite sport and after this it goes right into the NBA playoffs! As far as the top seeds it went to the teams with the best record which is a good basis but some of those records are a little inflated based on the conference like Duke for example. The ACC isn't the same ACC it was in the 90's the level a competition isn't there so thats why I suppose they won 30 and lost 4. The Big Ten and Big East would be the more power conferences in this and the Big 12 is pretty tough as well so I can agree with the other seeds. I haven't picked a champ yet, but my Final 4 consists of Kentucky facing UConn and Louisville facing Pitt on the other side. Lets see what happens!
