Shawn Kent Joins Producers Corner 11/17

Born Duchant Johnson in East Orange, New Jersey, Hip Hop artist Shawn Kent always had dreams of reaching stardom and escaping a neighborhood draped in Hood Politics. From East Orange to Irvington, in search of peace of mind, growing up proved to be more than just a “coming of age”. It was a right of passage for the strongest to find ways to succeed and survive. Shawn found his salvation, at first, in basketball. Violence and crime is what surrounded Shawn Kent’s daily life of basketball and making it to the National Basketball Association, NBA. Shawn’s talent for basketball kept him from joining local neighborhood gangs. Although focused on school and sports Shawn was brutally attacked by neighborhood gang members for reasons unknown. Contemplating retaliation by joining a gang himself, a close friend convinced him of greater things in life he would accomplish and talked him out of it. While focused on the NBA, a rapper by the name of Jorge “Jorb” Baerga was establishing a name for himself on New Jersey’s rap scene. Jorb worked closely with local artists The Outsidaz who began working with soon to be Hip Hop legend Eminem. It would be chance fate with the brother of a friend that would spark his curiosity for the art of freestyling, back in 2002. It was not until 2009 that Shawn began to record on a regular basis working with local disc jockey DJ Youngface who featured Shawn on a couple mixtapes. Never losing a battle by perfecting the art of rap, Shawn traveled with friends cruising for parties to challenge any MC willing to battle rap for fun. Shawn’s style of lyricism can be attributed to the likes of Fabolous and Joe Budden whose styles consist of punchlines and witty metaphors. Shawn believes the true ability to rap relies on word play and lyrics, when words are not just words but meanings, attributing to his flawless track sheet in battling. In 2010, Shawn put out his debut mixtape The Great Depression hosted by DJ Lazy K. As much love Shawn has for music, he never saw a future in being a fulltime rapper, dipping and dabbling in music while away at Seton Hall University. After graduation Shawn found it impossible to break into the workforce even with a degree. Being strapped financially and having to move back in with his mom brought about another strategy in this survivalist’s story. It was in 2012 when events unfolded that paved way for the artist seen today. Growing up in Irvington not only disciplined Shawn in perfecting basketball and rapping but boxing as well. During his late teens Shawn won multiple amateur boxing titles. Boxing became his main focus for finances and he still managed to generate a buzz on the rap scene. Life began looking promising until a life threatening experience caused Shawn to quit music in exchange for his life. Shawn began focusing on his boxing career but was still financially unstable and living at home with his longtime girlfriend. Believing he had hit his bottom, there was nowhere else to go but up from there and in late 2012 Shawn was accepted to and began attending the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. With his girlfriend he moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After meeting some rappers in Pittsburgh, Shawn decided to start rapping again. It was there Shawn became Shawn Kent. In Jersey he was always known as Shawn on the boxing scene due to announcers mispronouncing Duchant. He added Kent for emphasis of his lyrical style much like his favorite superhero character. It is of another world compared to the rest. Much like riding a bike, rapping and school comes natural to this talented man. Meeting fellow up and coming artists around time through party hopping, he soon befriended his future business partner Zane Lebowitz. Shawn began to seriously grind on the Pittsburgh rap scene and released his mixtape Boy Meets World Vol. 1: The Great Depression in 2013. His first video “Good Lord” off their mixtape received 33,000 views on YouTube by the time producer Apollo Brown had it removed for copyright infringement. However, with the support of a global crew with a movement expanding across and throughout America, Japan, and Germany it is only a matter of time before the world knows who Shawn Kent is. “I just want to be the best, my whole life I’ve been average or overlooked. For me it’s not about money, its just about leaving my mark as an artist. 10-20 years from now I want people to still listen to my songs.” Join us Monday at 7:00pm central on www.icebreakerradio.com Follow on twitter @Icebreakerradio @DeeDot81 @SupaMario_Jcs @KnuanceWorldLLC @Kool_Nerd

Music Review: Jimmy Jax Pinchak Band ( @JimmyJPBand )

Jimmy Jax Pinchak Band has sent me possibly the best songs of the summer to review so I won't waste anytime time getting to it! The first song that I want to review is "There is More".  The feel of the song is mellow but very energetic.  I love Jimmy's rough around the edges voice which fits perfectly with the sharp groove of the lead guitar.  This comes off as a lead track possibly on a soundtrack of a summer film.  This is one of those tracks that would make you buy the whole album.   The second song up for review is "On The Run".  Been listening to this one over and over trying to get my voice like Jimmy's but yeah, no luck. The piano work here is bluesy and heaven sent.  The guitar riffs makes me want to see the band live JUST to get that hard themed vibe and to feel the rumbling bass.  The song has some bite to it and it's edgy, just what I like! It gets chaotic on the breaks but I feel that that is what truly makes the song so damn good! The last song here up for review is "Tell Me". Beautiful crashing cymbals over a jagged, strong, electric guitar all work magically together. The songwriting on the track brings in a story that seems to ask for the "WHYS" of life. I Really dig the flavor and icy feel that transforms into a blazing inferno of real music.

About the Music and Artist:

"Blues/Rock That Jams" Jimmy is a professional actor (Peter Wiggin in Ender's Game, released in November, 2013) who is seriously pursuing his music career. Martha Troup (former manager of INXS) discovered Jimmy on the internet, checked out one of gigs and became his music manager. Jimmy has recorded his cd at Westlake Studios in Los Angeles and Stagg Street Studio in Van Nuys with his original guitar driven rockers. Currently, the Jimmy Jax Pinchak Band consists of: Jacob Delott on bass, Lael Eccard on drums, Nathan Leigh on keyboards, Stan Nirenberg on guitar and Jimmy Jax Pinchak on lead guitar and vocals. Jimmy's band is a late 60s influenced blues/rock band with a contemporary feel. He has been influenced by Freddie King, Hendrix, The Doors, The Beatles, The Allman Brothers and his favorite Eric Clapton. He also follows the Black Keyes and Gary Clark Jr. Jimmy's band performs classic blues such as "Trouble No More" "Going Down" and "Crossroads." His original, "Tell Me" is a rocker which includes a sizzling jam using his Vox Wah Wah pedal. Jimmy also demonstrates his abilities on slide with his original "Free Your Mind." His song "Into the Fire" has a slight country rock feel to it which Jimmy co-wrote with Wally Brandt from "Whiskey Falls." The more recent originals include: "There Is More" which is the leadoff track on the cd. His killer wah wah leads on the guitar solo fits perfectly with arguably Jimmy's strongest song. "On the Run" was written with Stan Nirenberg. It's a outlaw song which demonstrates Jimmy's strong deep raspy voice at it's finest. "Make It Better" further demonstates Jimmy's abilities as a songwriter, selling his lyrics with passion. Jimmy's cover of Tommy James' "Draggin the Line" makes the original feel good song more of a rocker with heavy guitar rythyms and a guitar solo not found in the original. A bonus track, "Soul Sacrifice" shows the talent of the band performing live. Each member shows their chops on Carlos Santana's classic. Josh Mosser (co-wrote and engineered Imagine Dragons' Radioactive) mixed down the tracks and Grammy award winner Erick Labson mastered it. MIXTAPE REVIEW: Nikki McKnight @706NIX – The McKnight Files

Have you heard of a little city in Georgia named Columbus? Well there is one artist that is making sure that you NEVER FORGET IT. Nikki(Nix @706nix) McKnight is a songwriter, artist, and producer that is making her name known through her music. She has made a lot of noise in Columbus and the people are listening. The McKnight Files features songs that have a lot of heart, courage, and honesty which she showcases on the high energy and hi-hat heavy track, “Motivation”, as well as the sonically refreshing “S.O.S”. NIX usually keeps it humble but on the hip hop techno synth filled “Hands Down” ft Mike Deville she basically eats her hater's food in front of them right off their plates. “I tried to remain humble but niggas think it's a game, yeah they pop off all they want to but never mention my name.” Then makes them do the dishes with “I Rep” ft Viktor Strange. Her confidence is up on this track as you can hear through the gut punching inflection in her flow. Super catchy. Viktor Strange's throaty delivery solidifies and reinforces the grimy feel of this song.   There are more than a few cuts for and about the women.

The ones that really pulled me in on personal levels were the guilt filled, piano themed, “Take Advantage” and telling a woman how bad she messed up on “Had it All” with an awesome Adele sample flip by producer Mike Kustom.   “Tell You”, produced by Nova, samples Janet Jackson's "Let's Wait Awhile" and well it really touched a G's soul. It takes a ton of strength to not only write about a loved one's passing but to also express the hurt of it all with music. Nix stood tall on this track and I only have four words for it. I WAS NOT READY.

Strengths: I really like how NIX has begun to spit with more confidence, that is one thing that really won me over. The Chemistry she has on beats from Mike Kustom shines through, and its a great blend on the songs they've created.

Notes for Improvement: I would say NIX has a great ear for beats. A lot of the beats used were ho-hum but she managed to still put her own energy into them. I like tracks that are slower for this artist, also if it's a high energy or self promotional song I would like to see what she does on a trap type beat. Keep rapping with that confidence and work on the balance of the tracks. There were a lot of tracks specifically focused on hoes, self promotion, and love triangles. Some of which weren't my cup of tea, but again I could definitely connect with the “Had it All” and “Take Advantage”. Shine on.   Review: A- WWW.706NIX.COM WWW.TWITTER.COM/706NIX

Dallas MC Rizzo Blaze hits Producers Corner 1/20/13

Naaaah don’t try to say I sound like so and so!” he proclaims inthe opening line of his nationally released single, Tony Hawk.20 year old, Dallas MC, Rizzo Blaze has already begun to cause a slew of on-lookers with the release of the visuals to his trill banger, Clockwork on his rizzomuzik YouTube channel. After receiving over 40,000 views in only 2 months, Rizzo Blaze is capitalizing on his notoriety with the release of his new single, Tony Hawk [Prod. By Rayy Hall] through Moak Entertainment/LRT/Universal Music Group on Nov. 19th, a feature in the Dec/Jan issue of XXL Magazine, and the release of his highly anticipated full-length project, Rizzo Blaze’s Breakthroughwhich has amassed over  5,000 plays and 900+ downloads in only 10 days.

Rizzo Blaze (Born, Khairi Medlock) found the love of musicnaturally. Influenced early on by his immensely talented, R&Bsinger/songwriter father, Terrance, Rizzo quickly took a liking to the “artist lifestyle.”  But he continued to watch from the outside, until a friend gave him a copy of T.I.’s “T.I. vs. T.I.P.” album and Lupe Fiasco’s “The Cool” in 8th grade. After hearing the complex and thought provoking lyrics throughout the MC’s albums, Rizzo officially made the decision to become an entertainer. He began writing and participating in freestyle cyphers to hone his abilities, leaving spectators very surprised at his skill level after only rapping for such a short time.

Rizzo Blaze got his first glimpse of the music industry during his junior year at W.T. White High School. After a freestyle cypher video featuring him began to cycle around the social network, Facebook, Rizzo was contacted by a young man by the name of David Choate, who was head of the upstart Dallas record label, Good Dreams. Within two weeks of meeting David, Rizzo had released four tracks online, and began to quickly build his reputation and fan base at local high schools.

Everything was rolling smoothly until one day; the rug was pulled right from under Rizzo’s feet when he was told that Good Dreams was going to be disbanding. Left with nowhere to record, no shows lined up, and extremely frustrated, Rizzo had nothing to do but work on perfecting his craft. And after about a year away from the studio, Rizzo had notebooks full of rhymes, but still only four tracks released. Thankfully those tracks caught the attention of a local alternative hip-hop duo called Calimoore, who eventually brought Rizzo onto their team in hopes of broadening their sound.

Only featuring on songs and tapes for the duo, Rizzo had yet to release any of his own material, and after a series of disagreements, Rizzo and Calimoore decided to part ways. But shortly after, he was referred to a man named Keith Garner by an administrator at his high school who also happened to be involved in music. Upon hearing Rizzo’s music, Keith instantly became a fan, and personally invited Rizzo to become part of his entertainment group called, BME, or ”Buziness MyndedEntertainment.” After a few phone conversations, the two met up, along with camera man, Josh Glowicki, to shoot the visuals for Rizzo’s song, Clockwork. The following time after was spent building on the relationship and laying out their plans for success. During this time, Rizzo began to release more music and began to further build his buzz performing in shows around his native Dallas, most notably in the 10th Annual Dallas Music Festival.

Not long after, the Florida based record label, Moak Entertainment began to show interest in Rizzo Blaze. This lead to the release of his debut single, Tony Hawk [Prod. By Rayy Hall], him being featured in XXL Magazine, and a considerable growth in fan following. Currently working on the visuals to his banger, Tony Hawk, and already working on his next project, Rizzo is definitely about to set the world ablaze!
